Cheerleaders from the Pompton Lakes Riverdale Youth Organization (PLRYO) get a tour of Chilton Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center after raising and donating a $1,800 check to the facility. They raised the money by selling pink hair extensions throughout October during football games to support breast cancer awareness: (clockwise from upper left) Allison Altieri, Tori Sturla, Kiana Secor, Megan Gosiker and Lizzie Sturla. October is long gone, but the community is still reaping the benefits from acts of compassion for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On February 28, the Pompton Lakes Riverdale Youth Organization (PLRYO) donated $1,800 to the Chilton Hospital Foundation. The money, which was raised during charity events during October 2011, will be used for enhancements to the hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center.

PLRYO, a football and cheerleading club for kindergarteners through eighth grade, invited the female members of its community to receive pink hair extensions throughout October during football games to support breast cancer awareness. The event was created by the PLRYO eighth grade cheerleaders, which plan a fundraiser each year.

Hair stylist Gina Secor selflessly volunteered to set up a table to provide the extensions at $10 apiece. The offer was available for fans of both home and visiting teams. Gina’s 13-year-old daughter, Kiana, is on the PLYRO squad as well. The cheerleaders spent a great deal of personal time promoting the event.

“It is so inspiring to see that these girls are already following the right path toward helping others,” said Chilton Hospital Foundation’s Executive Vice President Dawn Jones. “They can be assured that their hard work and dedication will help support the needs of a center that has experienced a 7 percent increase in the number of women served.”

The donation came at a perfect time: Chilton’s Comprehensive Breast Center staff also received great news that it was designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.
