Chilton Hospital’s Labyrinth Meditation Walk Open for Spiritual Healing|
The Rev. Roland Petit and Phlebotomist Hemangini Patel of the Laboratory meditate on opening day of the Labyrinth on May 16.
The Pastoral Care Department, under the leadership of The Rev. Roland Petit, recently opened its Labyrinth Meditation Walk for patients and visitors. Hospitals around the world have labyrinths for spiritual healing. Chilton now offers this free service for the community in its Interfaith Chapel.
What exactly is the Labyrinth?
The Labyrinth is a simple, self-led walking path that simulates a spiritual journey. Labyrinths have been used for more than 4,000 years and have many uses: for calming the mind, body and soul; as an aid to meditation/prayer; healing; a place of spiritual peace and safety; a way to develop self-knowledge; and stress relief.
What can patients and their visitors expect?
Meditative music and LED candles promote a healing atmosphere as the open path takes patients or their loved ones on a calming journey. Chilton’s Labyrinth has a simple path leading to the center where people may sit and unwind, pray or meditate, then return back out. There are also places to sit outside labyrinth to take in the beauty and to relax.
Is it easy, and is it possible to get lost?
It’s very simple and nobody will be lost in the wilderness. Shoes must be removed to avoid damage to the canvas. People will simply follow the path. It is meant to be walked slowly at each person’s own pace, focusing on his or her breathing.
When is it open to the public?
The Labyrinth is available anytime on the first and third Tuesday of each month starting at 9 a.m. It is open for 24 hours, closing on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
