Chilton Offers Customized Knee Replacement|

For those who suffer from severe knee arthritis, the Total Joint Center at Chilton Hospital now offers a groundbreaking solution that’s customized for each individual patient.
Chilton joins an elite group of hospitals worldwide to offer Personalized Knee Replacement surgery. This technique uses MRI-based technology to create a three-dimensional (3-D) model of the knee as well as computer software to detect and correct any deformity, ensuring the replacement joint fits perfectly with the patient’s existing anatomy.
“A primary difference between traditional knee replacement and personalized knee replacement is that the process starts several weeks before surgery,” said Robert Kayal, M.D., FAAOS, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who is pioneering this progressive surgical technique at Chilton.
Prior to surgery, an MRI scan is performed of the patient’s knee, hip and ankle. Special computer software is used to create a 3-D model that matches the orientation, size and dimensions of the patient’s own knee. This information is then used to create customized cutting guides which only fit the patient about to undergo knee replacement surgery. According to Dr. Kayal, these specially designed guides enable the surgeon to remove a precise amount of bone to accept the knee replacement implant and help to preserve as much of the healthy bone as possible.
The process also enables the surgeon to virtually correct any misalignment and return the knee to its pre-arthritic condition. Proper knee alignment has been shown to enhance satisfaction and promote joint longevity, added Dr. Kayal.
“Just as no two personalities are alike, knee joints are unique to each individual, and this revolutionary technology offers numerous benefits to patients,” explained Dr. Kayal, who specializes in partial and total knee replacement.
According to Dr. Kayal, patients spend less time in the operating room under anesthesia because much of the work is done ahead of the procedure. There is reduced trauma to the knee and more bone preservation due to less bone cutting, and the custom-fitted joint has also been known to speed rehabilitation with less post-operative pain.
Chilton introduced Customized Knee Replacement to its growing list of orthopedic services available in its Total Joint Center in February of 2013, with Dr. Kayal being the first to offer it to patients in Northern New Jersey.
