Chilton Hospital’s Parent Education Division Announces October Class Schedule

Chilton Hospital’s Community Outreach Department, Parent Education division, announces its October 2013 schedule. All classes require pre-registration at least one week in advance. For more information and registration, call Janet Amore at (973) 831-5475.

Childbirth Preparation (two four-week sessions): Thursdays, from Oct. 3 to 24, and Oct. 29 to Nov. 19, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., at Chilton Health Network, 242 West Parkway, Pompton Plains (just 1.5 miles from the hospital). Attendees will learn everything they need to know, including: stages of labor and birth, the partner’s role, coping techniques (Lamaze breathing and other methods of relaxation), pain management options and postpartum care. This comprehensive program addresses every aspect of childbirth and includes a tour of Chilton’s MotherBaby Center. Classes should be completed approximately four weeks before the baby’s due date. Pre-registration is $200.

One-Day Intensive Childbirth Preparation: Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Chilton Health Network, 242 West Parkway, Pompton Plains (just 1.5 miles from the hospital).  Attendees will learn everything they need to know, including: stages of labor and birth, the partner’s role, coping techniques (Lamaze breathing and other methods of relaxation), pain management options and postpartum care. Life After Gestational Diabetes for Me and My Baby: Monday, Oct. 7, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Collins Pavilion of Chilton Hospital, 97 West Parkway, Pompton Plains. Moms who have had gestational diabetes are invited to this workshop to learn strategies to decrease her risk for Type 2 diabetes and her baby’s risk for childhood obesity. Experts in the field of nutrition and exercise will provide practical tips for developing a healthy lifestyle. This informal session is for moms and babies. Pre-registration is $5.

Breastfeeding: Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., at Chilton Health Network, 242 West Parkway, Pompton Plains (just 1.5 miles from the hospital). Moms will discover the benefits of breastfeeding while receiving information on prenatal preparation, positioning, nutrition, how to avoid common problems and tips for making this a positive experience for mom and baby. Pre-registration is $40. This class is for expectant mother and father.

New Moms Group: Friday, Oct. 11 and 25, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, at Chilton Health Network, 242 West Parkway, Pompton Plains (just 1.5 miles from the hospital). Come join new moms and their infants for an informal group. Laugh, learn and share stories with other new moms. Babies welcomed! This free meeting is held every second and last Friday of each month. Pre-registration is required.

Sibling Preparation Class: Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at Chilton Hospital, 97 West Parkway, Pompton Plains, in the Cafeteria Conference Room. This class helps to ease older brothers and sisters into this new phase of their lives. Pre-registration is $40 for the first sibling and $25 for each additional sibling.

Car Seat Safety Check: Saturday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Collins Pavilion of Chilton Hospital, 97 West Parkway, Pompton Plains. Chilton Hospital will host a Car Seat Safety Check. Local police officers certified as child passenger safety technicians will show how to properly install and use a child car seat. Pre-registration is required for this free program.

Grandparents Class: Thursday, Oct. 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Chilton Hospital, 97 West Parkway, Pompton Plains, in the Board Room. There have been so many changes in childcare over the years. Certified Professional Childbirth Educator MaryAnn Deregibus, RN, CPCE will inform new and seasoned grandparents of the current trends and help to develop a better understanding between grandparents and new parents. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss your concerns and the new ideas in childcare. Pre-registration is $5.

Baby Basics: Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 7 to 9:30 p.m., at Chilton Health Network, 242 West Parkway, Pompton Plains (just 1.5 miles from the hospital). This class covers everything to know about bottles, burps, binkies and more. In addition, attendees will learn some basic steps on how to help infants sleep longer and soothe even the fussiest of babies in minutes, based on the “Happiest Baby on the Block” method. This class is for the expectant mother and partner. Grandparents are welcome too, for an additional fee. Pre-registration is $45.

Baby’s First Six Months: Monday, Oct. 28, from 7:30 to 9p.m., at Chilton Health Network, 242 West Parkway, Pompton Plains (just 1.5 miles from the hospital). Spend an evening with a Chilton pediatrician, who will discuss parenting in the first six months of life as well as important decisions to make before baby is born. Topics include newborn care, immunizations, allergies, crying, signs of illness, safety and more. Pre-registration is required for this free class.


Ongoing programs: Online education, hospital tours and breastfeeding support

Childbirth Education Online:  Are you unable to attend conventional prenatal classes due to bed rest, scheduling conflicts or time constraints? Chilton Hospital offers a web-based alternative suitable for any parent. The eLearning Childbirth Education Program is an interactive class that covers everything in the Childbirth Preparation program. After signing up, you will receive a password and instructions. Online class is $200, or $25 for those registered for the live Childbirth Preparation class.

Tour of Chilton Hospital’s new MotherBaby Center:  Tours are scheduled for Wednesdays and Sundays at 7:30 p.m. Please call in advance to register (973) 831-5122.

Breastfeeding Warm Line:  Breastfeeding sounds like it would come naturally, but unexpected issues may occur. Problems such as plugged ducts, leaking and other normal occurrences can lead to anxiety and stress. For any questions or concerns about breastfeeding, Chilton Hospital’s MotherBaby Center offers a Breastfeeding Warm Line for support and personalized care. It’s free of charge and your call will be answered within 24 hours. Our specialists, who are available between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., can determine whether you need a physician’s order for a lactation consultant.
