Dr. Reza Farhangfar Receives Statewide APPLE Award for Collaboration with Chilton Hospital Nurses|
Pulmonologist Reza Farhangfar, M.D., is named a 2013 “Acknowledging Physician Partners: Liaison for Excellence (APPLE) Award” recipient in recognition of his collaboration with, and support for nurses at Chilton Hospital in the delivery of excellent patient care.
The Institute for Nursing, a foundation of the New Jersey State Nurses Association, will present the APPLE Award at its annual ceremony on October 9, at the Bally’s Casino & Resort in Atlantic City. Only 14 physicians in the state received the honor this year.
Dr. Farhangfar, of Wayne, NJ, has been an active member of Chilton’s medical staff since 1992. He served as chairman of the Department of Medicine from 2007 to 2011. In 2011 he served as vice president of the medical staff, and became president in 2012. During his tenure as president, the hospital fully implemented Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE). The paperless system is designed to optimize patient care and patient safety.
“Dr. Farhangfar has provided great leadership and balance as the voluntary medical staff were supported to adopt the new CPOE system,” said Chilton’s Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Joanne Reich, DNPc, RN, MA, NEA-BC. “He continues to be involved in the adoption of technology and can be seen visiting patients with his iPad in hand. As Dr. Farhangfar often manages critically ill patients in the ICU, he is able to gently have the challenging end-of-life conversations with families, empathizing with their pain and sadness and then guiding them through the difficult decisions. Every encounter he has with his patients is kind and caring. In addition, Dr. Farhangfar recognizes that collaboration among the team members is crucial to optimal patient outcomes. He is always willing to review a case with the staff being open to their questions and their contributions to the care of the patient.”
Aside from spearheading Chilton’s CPOE project, Dr. Farhangfar achieved numerous accomplishments as president of Chilton’s medical staff, including:
- Updating the credentialing process for physicians and licensed independent practitioners
- Providing strong leadership through the enhancement of the credentialing process for advance practice nurses so that our patients could benefit from their expertise and contributions to care.
- Improving the process for communication of consultations to assure that provider-to-provider handoff remains effective and safe.
