Master Kim’s Tiger Tae Kwon Do, Kinnelon, held its annual “Charity Breakathon” on Saturday, November 23. The event raised $1,500 for the Pediatric Clinic at Chilton Hospital.

The 2013 event marks the third time that Master Yeong Jae Kim’s studio donated money raised to Chilton’s Pediatric Clinic. The martial arts program, located in the Kinnelon Mall next to Pathmark, has now raised and donated a total of $6,500 for the Pediatric Clinic from the 2009, 2010 and 2013 events. The 2012 Breakathon was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy and the 2011 Breakathon benefitted the Kinnelon Volunteer Fire Department.

Master Kim’s students raise the money each year by being sponsored for breaking blocks of wood. It was a community-wide effort as the students asked neighbors, family members and their parents’ co-workers and friends to help out by donating a minimum of $2 per block broken.

According to Master Kim, about 90 percent of his students are kids. “Our school follows the philosophy of Taekwondo, which is cultivating healthy values and a healthy mental and physical discipline,” he said. “It is a privilege to provide any guidance toward building a bright future for the community and especially for the children. Our students are very fortunate to have the opportunity to practice Taekwondo and are happy to support children who are not as fortunate as they are. That is why we feel that it’s important for a healthy community to donate to the Pediatric Clinic at Chilton.”

A total of 36 students from the following categories participated:

  • 10 “PeeWees” (ages 4 to 6)
  • 19 “Children” (ages 7 to 12)
  • Seven ‘Teens/Adults” (ages 13 to 57)

“We are very grateful that Master Kim’s Tiger Tae Kwon Do chose Chilton Hospital as the recipient of this fundraising event for three years,” said Chilton Hospital Foundation Director Joan Beloff. “The compassion and generosity from Master Kim, his staff and students will once again provide much needed items for Chilton’s Pediatric Clinic, which provides comprehensive primary care services to children from birth to age 19.”
