FAQs About HBO Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at Chilton HospitalWhat can I expect during treatment?
Your therapy is provided while you lie down in a transparent, atmosphere-controlled chamber that circulates pure oxygen at a pressure that is two to three times greater than normal. You will not experience any pain, though you may feel like your ears are plugged from the increased pressure – the same feeling you might get while flying or swimming. You are free to move during treatment and may relax by listening to music, chatting with our staff, or taking a nap.

Is HBO Therapy safe?
Absolutely. HBO therapy has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat non-healing wounds and several other medical conditions. There are no serious side effects, and your treatment is medically-supervised by a board-certified physician.

How long will it take?
That depends. The number of sessions and length of treatment will vary based on your particular condition, progress and goals. For instance, diabetic wounds typically require a series of 90 to 120 minute sessions, while those with carbon monoxide poisoning remain in the chamber for three hours each visit. Wound healing may require up to 40 treatments.

What should I wear?
We will provide comfortable, cotton garments for you to wear during therapy. You may store personal items in a locker provided, although it is recommended that you leave valuables at home. Our staff will advise you of other restrictions prior to treatment.

Is HBO therapy covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans cover HBO therapy for wound care. Our staff will pre-certify treatments with your insurance company to ensure coverage.
