Mother Baby Center Frequently Asked Questions

Having a baby often brings a lot more questions than answers. They're all welcome here at Chilton Hospital. Nevertheless, we understand that your bundle also comes with a lot more responsibility...and a lot less free time! So perhaps we can save you a call with responses to a few common inquiries:

How can I obtain my baby's birth certificate?

Does Chilton offer newborn photography?

When will I receive my child's social security number?

Does Chilton offer help to those with low income and/or little or no health insurance?

How can I obtain my baby's birth certificate?
Within three days of your baby's birth, Chilton Hospital will send required information to the State of New Jersey. The State will then forward your child's original birth certificate to the Pequannock Township Health Department, which in turn, will mail you a letter indicating that the certificate is available for purchase. You'll be instructed to send a fee along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope and copies of an accepted form of identification, including one of the following options: a valid photo driver's license or non-driver's license; or a photo ID and alternative form of ID with address; or two alternative forms of ID with address.

If you have any questions regarding your child's Birth Certificate, please contact:

Pequannock Township Health Department
Attn: Vital Records
530 Newark-Pompton Turnpike
Pompton Plains, NJ 07444
(973) 835-5700, ext. 127

Does Chilton offer newborn photography?
Absolutely! Most new parents can't wait for those first professional shots, so we offer a fully digital newborn photography service that allows you to securely access and order photographs on-line. The service is optional; there is no obligation to have your baby photographed or to place an order. Our Mother Baby Center staff will provide more details about this program following your delivery. You can also preview the service by visiting our Web Nursery.

When will I receive my child's social security number?
Chilton submits information to the Social Security Administration within a few days of your child's birth. It can take up to six months for the government to complete the process and mail your child's card.

Does Chilton offer help to those with low income and/or little or no health insurance?
Yes. Chilton operates three outpatient clinics for families that cannot afford the full costs of medical treatment due to low income and/or lack of health insurance. All three clinics – Pediatric, Medical and Obstetrics (OB) – provide primary care services to our residents.

Our OB Clinic is aimed at ensuring the health of pregnant women and their unborn babies by offering prenatal and postpartum care, while newborns and children up to 18 years of age may visit our Pediatric Clinic for immunizations, wellness checks and sick care.

Chilton offers comprehensive financial counseling to patients to determine assistance from both New Jersey State and federal programs. No patient is ever turned away for medically necessary services. Upon admission, a member of our staff will provide additional information to those who may qualify for financial assistance. If you have further questions or would like to receive an application in advance, please call a Chilton financial counselor at (973) 831-5248.
