Pulmonary rehabilitation is a supervised program of exercise and education designed specifically for people with lung disorders, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, chronic asthma, bronchiectasis, lung cancer and shortness of breath. At Chilton Medical Center’s Pulmonary Center, we can help patients reduce symptoms, decrease disability and improve participation in daily living activities.
Our rehabilitation team includes pulmonologists, respiratory therapists, dieticians and social workers. They’ll work with you to develop a plan customized to your individual needs and abilities. Provided on an outpatient basis, rehabilitation services may include:
- Exercises utilizing tread mills, stationary bicycles and free weights
- Lifestyle changes
- Nutritional counseling
- Education on lung disease and how to manage it
- Energy-conserving techniques
- Breathing strategies
- Psychological counseling
Session durations and exercise intensity are gradually increased over time until you’re able to accomplish significantly more activity with less shortness of breath. After pulmonary rehabilitation is completed, we recommend a specialized exercise program to maintain physical fitness levels. Learn more >
